Teaching a lesson as part of your interview

Teaching a lesson is now a common feature of most selection processes.   The length of the lesson can vary considerably.  If you are given 40 minutes to an hour you will be expected to conduct a lesson containing all the features of an effective lesson.  If the lesson is for 20 minutes, you are probably being assessed mainly, on the way that you interact and engage with the students.

Liaise with the school to find out about the students: prior knowledge, ability levels, any SEND, what behavior systems they are used to etc.  Ask for a layout of the classroom or even better, visit the school and look at the layout.  As well as helping you to prepare a good lesson, you will demonstrate that you prepare lessons thoroughly and are very well organized.

After you have conducted the lesson, reflect and make some notes on how it went, how it could have been better and what you would do next with the students.  Your interview is likely to contain a questions asking you to reflect on the lesson you taught.
